CIMA Exemptions

Nothing. CIMA does not charge an exemption fee, which is a real difference from some other qualifications where each skipped paper carries a per-paper charge. A handful of third-party guides state a CIMA exemption fee anyway; CIMA's own guidance is clear that the exemption itself is free.

What you still pay for is the qualification around the exemptions: registration and the annual subscription that keeps your student status active, plus the exams you do go on to sit. Exemptions reduce the number of those exams, they do not remove the standing costs of being a CIMA student. So the saving from an exemption is real but it is time and exam fees, not an exemption charge you avoid.

Because CIMA charges nothing for an exemption, the cost argument that exists elsewhere does not apply here. Skipping a paper you are entitled to skip does not cost you a fee, so the decision comes down to one thing: how well you actually know the material.

The Certificate and Operational levels build the technical base that the Management and Strategic case studies then test in an integrated way. If your prior study of a topic was solid and recent, taking the exemption and moving on is sensible. If it was thin, some years ago, or under a different syllabus, sitting the exam can be the safer path, because the case study levels assume that base is already there. Judge it on your real command of the subject, not just on whether a certificate entitles you to skip it.

CIMA reviews each application individually, mapping your prior learning against its own syllabus outcomes. AAT

A common route into CIMA. If you have completed the AAT Professional Diploma in Accounting, you are exempt from the whole Certificate in Business Accounting (BA1 to BA4), and AAT members get a fast-track exemptions service (CIMA exemptions calculator page). Relevant degrees

An accounting, finance or business degree can earn exemptions across the Certificate level and into the professional levels, but the number varies widely by university and by the modules you studied. This is where generic "a degree gets you X exemptions" claims are least reliable, because the same-named degree from two institutions can map differently. Confirm yours on the calculator.

Other professional bodies

CIMA only awards exemptions for another professional body's qualification where CIMA has accredited it (CIMA exemptions policy), so whether yours counts, and how far it takes you, depends on the body and the qualification. To receive CIMA's intermediate awards you must pass at least the applicable case study exam, so check exactly where you would join on the calculator.

A note on the Finance Leadership Programme

Exemptions apply to the traditional exam route.
