CIMA E1 Common Mistakes & Exam Technique

E1 is narrative and technology-focused, so most errors come from mixing up structurally similar concepts rather than genuine gaps in knowledge.

1. Shared service centres, business partnering, and outsourcing are distinct finance structures

A shared service centre centralises transactional work in-house; business partnering embeds finance staff within business units to support decision-making; outsourcing moves the function to an external provider entirely. Each has different implications for cost, control, and the type of finance skillset needed — don't treat them as three names for the same thing.

2. Data governance and data security are related but different concepts

Data governance concerns who owns data, how it's managed, and the policies around its quality and use; data security concerns protecting that data from unauthorised access or loss. A question about ownership and accountability for data quality is testing governance, not security.

3. Know what each digital technology actually does, not just that it's 'digital'

Artificial intelligence, robotic process automation, and blockchain solve different problems — AI supports pattern recognition and prediction, RPA automates rules-based repetitive tasks, and blockchain provides a distributed, tamper-resistant ledger. A question naming a specific business problem is testing whether you can match it to the right technology, not just recognise digital buzzwords.
