CIMA BA4 Common Mistakes & Exam Technique

BA4 is entirely narrative, which means marks are lost through imprecise terminology rather than calculation errors — knowing roughly what a concept means isn't the same as knowing its exact definition.

1. Ethical theories have distinct, specific meanings

Deontological ethics judges an act by whether it follows a moral rule, regardless of outcome; consequentialism (utilitarianism) judges it by its outcomes; virtue ethics asks what a person of good character would do. These are commonly tested against each other, and a plausible-sounding answer that blends two theories together will miss the mark the question is actually testing.

2. The CIMA Code's fundamental principles are not interchangeable

Integrity (being straightforward and honest) and objectivity (not allowing bias or undue influence) are frequently confused, since both relate broadly to trustworthy conduct. Learn what specifically distinguishes each of the five principles rather than treating them as synonyms.

3. Unitary and two-tier board structures are genuinely different governance models

A unitary board has executive and non-executive directors sitting together on one board; a two-tier structure separates a management board from a supervisory board entirely. Questions on international governance variation test this structural distinction directly.

4. An invitation to treat is not an offer

Goods displayed in a shop window or advertised for sale are (in general) an invitation to treat, not a legal offer — the customer makes the offer by attempting to purchase, which the seller can accept or decline. Treating a display or advertisement as an offer in itself is a classic contract law error.

5. Company and partnership liability follow different rules

A company has separate legal personality, so shareholders' liability is normally limited to their investment; a traditional partnership has no separate legal personality, and partners are personally liable for the firm's debts. Confusing the two liability regimes is a common and costly error.
