CIMA BA3 Common Mistakes & Exam Technique

BA3 tests the mechanics of double-entry bookkeeping and basic financial statement preparation — most errors come from posting to the wrong side of an account or adjusting in the wrong direction, not from misunderstanding the underlying concept.

1. Know which side of the reconciliation needs adjusting

Items like unpresented cheques and outstanding lodgements adjust the bank statement balance; items like bank charges and dishonoured cheques adjust the cash book balance. Adjusting the wrong side produces a reconciliation that appears to balance but is conceptually wrong.

2. Straight-line and reducing balance depreciation are not interchangeable

Straight-line spreads (cost less residual value) evenly over useful life; reducing balance applies a fixed percentage to the asset's carrying amount each year, so the charge falls over time. Using the wrong method — or applying the reducing-balance percentage to original cost instead of the reducing carrying amount — is a frequent error.

3. Control accounts post in the same direction as the individual ledger they summarise

A receivables control account increases with credit sales and decreases with cash received and credit notes, mirroring individual customer accounts. Posting an item to the wrong side of the control account is one of the most common sources of an out-of-balance trial balance.

4. Accruals and prepayments adjust in opposite directions

An accrual increases an expense (something owed but not yet paid); a prepayment decreases it (something paid in advance of the period it relates to). Confusing the two — or applying the adjustment in the wrong period — is a classic error under time pressure.

5. A suspense account exists because of an error, not despite one

When a trial balance doesn't balance, a suspense account is opened for the difference, and correcting journal entries are then posted against it as errors are found. The logic runs in that order — don't try to eliminate the suspense balance before identifying the actual error causing it.
